The creator of Evangelion, Hideaki Anno, states that his male copilot Kaworu Nagisa was meant to be a love interest. The series clearly portrays him as being attracted to both his female and male copilots. Shinji, however, is very introspective and aware of his faults, holding a deep hatred towards himself. He has a deep fear of being hated or abandoned, so he often strays away from making connections with others in the fear that they will leave him.
He strives to do what those around him want him to do in order to receive praise and validation, meaning most other characters see him as a pushover. Shinji, although outwardly gentle most of the time, is introverted, shy and often seems disconnected from the world around him. In Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition (or Rebuild of Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo), he wears a blue and black plugsuit with rib like structures along the sides of the chest and red cores with green detailing to pilot Evangelion Unit 13. The plugsuit he is also seen wearing while piloting Eva is skin-tight with blue, navy blue and a baby blue with red detailing. He is most often seen wearing his school uniform, a white button-up shirt, black pants, navy blue undershirt, belt and white tennis shoes.
Shinji has blue eyes, dark brown hair and is an average height relative to the other teenaged pilots in the series. He first appears when he is called by his estranged father to pilot the biomech Evangelion Unit 01 to fight the Angels attacking Tokyo-3. Shinji Ikari is the protagonist of the Evangelion series, he is the Third Child and the pilot of Evangelion Unit 01.
